Mold is a type of fungi, a eukaryotic organism that exists in a separate classification from plants and animals. Mold or fungal growth forms as flower-like discoloration and spreads on various damp decaying organic materials such as cellulose and wood-based materials. Though there are many different species of mold, only certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (mycotoxins). Mold species such as Stachybotrys chartarum are known to produce mycotoxins that are hazardous to human health when allowed to accumulate in indoor environments.
Health-harming fungal contaminations can happen at home, work, health facilities, production facilities, and raw materials storage facilities. Thus, measures are required to avoid health damages and financial losses caused by toxic mold.
